A Light Burden

Worship Notes for Sunday Nov. 1, 2020 at Christ Covenant, Matthews, NC

The world changes quickly. Movements come and go. Elections pass. Leaders rise and fall, as do nations. Even science presents constantly changing information. There is no lasting confidence to be had in earthly things. This year in particular has been heavy, weighed down by a constantly changing landscape full of cares.

But the Lord is an everlasting rock and is sovereign over all the affairs of man. Further, he is the Lord of the heart. To our wonder, this King above all Kings has not removed himself from man, but has called us and moved us toward himself through Christ. He is transcendent, and yet near.

Not only this, he shepherds, guides, heals, and brings to us an unyielding eternal rest. Jesus drives away all our doubt and calls us to cast all our cares upon him. In Matthew 11 we learn that the Christ’s burden is light – his yolk is easy. Why is this and why does it help? Maybe in part it is for the joy of knowing we are being carried along in the gentle arms of our sovereign King, even as we labor in his name. Sovereignty is a very practical truth.
